Robert Upshur Woodward popularly known as Bob Woodward is an investigative journalist and author who belongs to the United States. He holds the title of associate editor in The Washington Post. In 1973, with his investigation partner Carl Bernstein, he won the Pultizer Prize for The Washington Post 1973 for his investigative reporting on the Watergate scandal.

Personal Life

His father’s name is Alfred E. Woodward and his mother’s name is Jane Upshur. Bob’s father was a lawyer and later became chief judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit Court. When he was twelve, his parents got divorced and his father raised Bob and his brother and sister.

He completed his schooling at Wheaton Community High School (WCHS), a public high school in Wheaton. For his graduation, he studied history and English literature at Yale College with a scholarship from the Naval Reserve Officers Training corps. He completed his B.A degree in 1965. Woodward served in the US Navy for 5 years, he was assigned to handle the nuclear launch codes The Wright carried in its capacity as a National Emergency Command Post Afloat.

He married his wife Elsa Walsh in 1989. He has been married three times, he married his first wife Kathleen Middlekauff in 1966 and got divorced in 1969. Bob married his second wife named Frances Kuper in 1974 and the couple got divorced in 1979. He has two daughters named Taliesin Woodward and Diana Woodward. Tali is also a journalist like his father, she completed his graduation in journalism at Columbia University.

Career

In August 1970, he was discharged as a lieutenant. He enrolled in Harvard Law school but decided to not attend it. Instead, he was taking graduate courses at George Washington University in international relations and Shakespeare, and he applied for the post of a reporter in The Washington Post but he got rejected after a two-week trial because of his lack of journalistic experience.

He got hired as a Post reporter in 1971 at the Montgomery Sentinel, a newspaper in Washington. In 1973, with his investigation partner Carl Bernstein, he won the Pultizer Prize for The Washington Post 1973 for his investigative reporting on the Watergate scandal. Their book All the President’s Men which was based on the Watergate scandal became a bestseller and later turned into a movie.

He faced criticism for exposing personalities like comedian John Belushi and former U.S vice president Dan Quayle. He later shifted his focus to hard news and the power and politics of Washington.
