Elizabeth II Family
Elizabeth’s father was Prince Albert, Duke of York (the second son of King George V and Queen Mary), and her mother was Elizabeth, Duchess of York (the youngest daughter of the Scottish aristocrat Claude Bowes-Lyon and his wife, the Englishwoman Cecilia Strathmore). Elizabeth has two siblings: Margaret, who was born four years after her; and Edward, who was born six years later.

She married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and they have four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Andrew, Duke of York; and Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Elizabeth and Philip have also eight grandchildren, Princes William and Harry of Wales, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York, Peter and Zara Phillips, as well as Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Elizabeth II Reign
When her father passed away in February 1952, Elizabeth—then 25 years old—instantly became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), as well as Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth marched through various political upheavals such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland and devolution in the United Kingdom.

The number of her realms shifted over time as territories gained independence and some realms became republics. Her numerous historic visits and meetings include state visits to China in 1986, Russia in 1994, and the Republic of Ireland in 2011, and visits with five popes. Some major events during Elizabeth’s reign are her coronation in 1953 and the Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilees in 1977, 2002, 2012, and 2022, respectively.

Elizabeth was the longest-reigning British monarch and the second-longest reigning sovereign in world history, only behind Louis XIV of France. Throughout her reign, she occasionally faced republican sentiment and media criticism of her family, especially after the breakups of her children’s marriages, her annus horribilis in 1992, and the death of Princess of Wales Diana, her daughter-in-law, in 1997. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was consistently popular throughout her reign, and support for the monarchy in the United Kingdom remained strong. Elizabeth died at the age of 96, after a long and successful reign, at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.
